NSK to Dismiss 2,000 Temp Staff at Domestic Plants 2009-01-07
NSK Ltd, Japan¡¯s largest manufacturer of bearings, plans to dismiss about 2,000 temporary workers, about 80 percent of such staff, at the group¡¯s domestic plants by March, company sources said Tuesday.
Bearing demand from automakers and computer chip manufacturers has declined, forcing NSK to cut production substantially, the sources said.
These temporary workers, dispatched by job placement agencies, are on contracts that will expire by the end of March, the sources said, adding the company does not plan to let go any workers before their contracts run out.
The reductions will center on major plants for automotive bearings in Shiga, Kanagawa and Gunma prefectures, they said, adding NSK plans to cut some 1,000 regular jobs at U.S. and other overseas plants by June.
